European Champion, Olympian Ciara Mageean Dies at 34
Irish middle-distance runner and two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean died at 34 after being diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in 2025, her family said. She represented Ireland at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, won European 1,500-meter gold in 2024, and earned earlier European medals and Commonwealth silver while setting Irish records across several middle-distance events. An Achilles injury forced her to withdraw from the Paris Olympics shortly before her scheduled event. Mageean married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, in Belfast shortly before her death. Her family, Athletics Ireland and others remembered her for her courage, kindness and inspiration.
