Purdue pauses Notre Dame football series, Irish add Illinois games
Purdue has paused its football series with Notre Dame, replacing their scheduled 2027 game with a road matchup against West Virginia and seeking a replacement for the 2028 meeting, which is also off. Purdue athletic director Tommy McClelland said the rivalry could return in future schedules, citing anticipated College Football Playoff expansion and scheduling needs. Notre Dame filled both dates with a home-and-home series against Illinois, hosting the Illini on Sept. 4, 2027, and visiting Champaign on Sept. 2, 2028. Notre Dame has won 11 straight games against Purdue, including a 49-10 victory this season. The Fighting Irish lead Illinois 11-0-1; the teams have not met since 1968.
