Royals hire Mense as co-hitting coach after 69-93 season
The Kansas City Royals are hiring Missouri native Hunter Mense as an assistant hitting coach after his 2026 season as the San Francisco Giants’ hitting coach. Mense previously spent four seasons as an assistant hitting coach with Toronto and held player-development roles in the Blue Jays organization. He will join Marcus Thames as a major-league co-hitting coach, while Connor Dawson is expected to serve as offensive coordinator. Alec Zumwalt, removed from the major-league role after five seasons, will remain with Kansas City as senior director of hitting performance, focusing on the minors. The changes follow a 69-93 season in which the Royals improved offensively but still ranked below the league average in wRC+ and 22nd in runs scored.
