Spotted Lanternflies Detected in Massachusetts, Ontario
Spotted lanternflies, an invasive insect spreading across parts of Massachusetts and into Canada, feed on sap and may threaten grapevines, fruit trees and other crops, though officials say damage to large shade trees has not been substantial. Springfield officials say the pest arrived in the city in 2022, while Canadian authorities have confirmed detections in Windsor–Essex; the insect’s ability to establish in Quebec and withstand its winters remains uncertain. Residents are advised to crush small numbers of insects and scrape and destroy egg masses, while larger infestations may require traps; sticky bands should be shielded with mesh to protect wildlife. Reports also describe lanternflies appearing in downtown Worcester.
