ST Launches Lower-Cost In-Cabin Image Sensor
STMicroelectronics has introduced the ST SafeSense VD56GA, a compact 1.1-megapixel automotive image sensor designed to help automakers and Tier 1 suppliers deploy driver and occupant monitoring across higher-volume vehicle platforms. Its backside-illuminated DeepNIR pixel architecture delivers 35% higher image sharpness and nearly 60% greater infrared sensitivity than the previous generation, supporting performance in challenging environments such as under-display cameras. The sensor’s sensitivity and embedded image-processing features can reduce camera-module costs by enabling simpler optics, infrared illumination, filtering and external processing requirements. Housed in a space-saving package, the VD56GA is intended for compact in-cabin camera designs, while front-end production in Crolles, France, is positioned as a supply-chain and quality-control advantage.
