States win approval for hundreds of new Opportunity Zones
Several states are moving ahead with Opportunity Zones 2.0, a federal tax-incentive program intended to attract private investment, create jobs and spur development in underserved communities. Nebraska received approval for 28 census tracts, while Kentucky had 137 tracts approved across 76 counties; New Mexico selected 65 zones in 22 counties, more than half of them rural. Oklahoma identified 104 qualified tracts, pending final Treasury certification, with the new zones expected to open for investment in 2027. The program offers tax benefits to investors who reinvest capital gains and hold qualifying investments, though Oklahoma officials cautioned that designation alone does not guarantee local economic growth.
