Student’s Parent Reportedly Detained at California College

ICE officers reportedly detained the parent of an Allan Hancock College student at the Santa Maria campus Monday morning, taking the person from a parking lot and leaving immediately. The college said it had no advance notice and did not assist, emphasizing that its campuses should be safe for students and that it does not conduct immigration enforcement or release student records without legal authorization. The student’s father was identified by family at a campus press conference, and a vigil was held; local officials condemned the action and voiced concern about fear among students and mixed-status families. ICE told a local television station it had no record of activity at the campus that morning, while the college and other local sources said ICE officers had carried out the detention. The reported campus arrest is particularly unusual amid expanded immigration enforcement and the rescinding of federal guidance limiting arrests in sensitive locations such as schools.
