Study finds nearly 6,000 unhoused near LA Olympic sites, with no shelter plan yet

Researchers from UCLA and USC estimate that 5,975 unsheltered people live within one mile of proposed venues for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles County, more than three times the county’s earlier estimate of about 1,600. The researchers used homelessness-count data and modeled potential security perimeters, while noting that the boundaries have not been finalized and the estimate could change. County officials have been told to plan for perimeters as wide as one mile, but no detailed plan has been announced for providing shelter, services or housing to people who might be displaced. The study’s authors warn that moving unhoused residents without such safeguards would shift rather than solve homelessness, and the estimate may be higher because Pasadena and Long Beach were excluded.
