Study Links Legal Sports Betting to Lower Savings
A study of financial transactions from 183,821 U.S. households found that legalizing online sports betting was associated with reduced household savings and investments, as betting generally did not replace other gambling or consumer spending. The effects were strongest among financially constrained households: frequent bettors tended to have lower incomes, smaller investment balances and more credit card debt, while legalization was linked to rising debt, less available credit and more overdrafts. The findings suggest that some bettors fund wagering with money that otherwise could go toward savings, retirement or debt payments, putting long-term financial stability at risk.
