Supplements Lack Evidence for Treating Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, may be focal and occur without an underlying cause, or may result from a medical condition or medication. Because treatment depends on the cause, clinicians assess when and where sweating occurs, whether it happens during sleep and what medications a person takes. Evidence does not support a general supplement regimen to control hyperhidrosis; findings about sage for menopausal hot flashes, for example, cannot be assumed to apply to other types of excessive sweating. Treating an identified nutritional deficiency may be appropriate, but supplements should not be presumed to stop sweating, and medication or other treatment choices should be discussed with a health professional.
