Swiss Museum Opens Glacier-Melt Warning Exhibit
A new “Treasury of Ice” exhibition at Lucerne’s Glacier Garden displays objects uncovered as Switzerland’s glaciers melt, including ancient hunting gear, Roman-era artifacts, mountaineering equipment and discarded rubbish. The exhibit also presents glacier footage, thaw data and evidence preserved in ice, such as pollen and pollution particles, highlighting glaciers’ value as historical and environmental archives. Swiss glaciologists report a 5.5% loss in the country’s glaciers this year, the second-largest decline on record, and organizers say they want the collection seen before continued melting exposes or destroys more of this record.
