Takaichi Cabinet Approval Falls Below 50%
Support for Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s administration has weakened amid controversy over former agriculture minister Kazuo Yana, whose remarks about road funding and alleged election-law violations led to his resignation. A Kyodo News poll put cabinet approval at 49.1%, its lowest since Takaichi took office and the first time it fell below 50%; other recent polls varied, from 47.1% to 57%. Majorities in the surveys said Yana’s departure was warranted, and many judged Takaichi’s response too slow. The administration also faces scrutiny over its proposed temporary cut to the consumption tax on food and drinks, with respondents divided over support for the plan and some expressing concern about its effect on public finances.
