Taliban Seeks U.S. Return, Embassy Remains Closed

Five years after the United States closed its Kabul embassy and withdrew from Afghanistan, the Taliban are seeking renewed diplomatic ties, investment and a possible American diplomatic presence. Washington has not recognized the Taliban government, has no current plan to resume military involvement, and continues to warn Americans against traveling to Afghanistan because of terrorism, kidnapping and wrongful detention risks. Any reopening of an embassy would likely depend on verifiable Taliban actions and gradual, reciprocal progress rather than promises alone. Separately, Turkey and Qatar are trying to mediate between Pakistan and Kabul, but a deadly attack in Kohat and Pakistan’s accusations that the Taliban allow the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan to operate from Afghan territory have complicated the effort. The continuing security dispute and unresolved consequences of the U.S. withdrawal underscore the difficulty of maintaining strategic engagement while remaining physically absent.
