U.S. Calls Grow for AI Safety Rules

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing the development of increasingly capable AI systems to address serious risks while preserving the technology’s benefits. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue and other industry figures endorsed the idea, while OpenAI and Anthropic supported third-party safety evaluators with broad internal access. The debate intensified after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon accused leading labs of “gambling with our lives,” and other researchers warned that poorly controlled superintelligent systems could pose an existential threat; some investors and industry voices, including Altimeter CEO Brad Gerstner, called those warnings exaggerated and cited existing safeguards. Bipartisan lawmakers have called for stronger oversight, including human-control requirements, government testing and the ability to disable dangerous systems, but have not reached consensus. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker urged immediate federal and industry action and called on Big Tech to stop lobbying against safety regulations, while President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about human extinction and emphasized the importance of keeping the United States ahead of China.
