Ireland's Data Protection Commission fined Google €403 million for violating the EU General Data Protection Regulation over location data. The six-year investigation launched after complaints from European consumer advocacy groups covered data collected between May 25, 2018 and February 4, 2020 and examined Web & App Activity, Location History and Location Accuracy. The DPC found insufficient disclosure that location data could be used for targeted advertising or inferring interests and some data retained longer than necessary. The DPC issued the fine decision and ordered Google to bring practices into compliance within six months. The fine is the fourth largest issued by the DPC since GDPR took effect. Google said the case concerns historical policies.
