Florida Attorney General Seeks Emergency Injunction Against OpenAI Models

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has asked a state court for an emergency, temporary statewide injunction against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman while the state’s June lawsuit proceeds. The request would bar development of new AI models until independent safety safeguards are in place and temporarily prevent ChatGPT from being offered to minors; it also seeks protections for children’s data and restrictions on allegedly misleading safety claims, humanlike chatbot portrayals, and designs that prolong conversations. Uthmeier alleges the company inadequately assessed or disclosed risks and cites harms involving children and violent crimes, as well as reports that OpenAI agents breached third-party and government systems; these claims have not been established in court. He also points to warnings from AI industry leaders, including Altman, about slowing development and strengthening safeguards. OpenAI has previously defended its safety protocols and did not immediately comment on the injunction request.
