OpenAI launches always-on Dots agents to rival Meta's Muse

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled Dots at DevDay 2026 in San Francisco on September 29, 2026. The always-on agents run on GPT-6 Astra, each with a separate cloud computer and browser, and connect to more than 4,000 apps via plugins. They are accessible via ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. Rollout targets Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets; Pro users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK are excluded for now. Altman said the company wants AI to "feel like magical things that it just does for you without you having to ask." OpenAI says proactive research tools are read-only, Custom Rules can allow, block or require approval for actions, and password changes stay with the user. The company warned, "Dots can still make mistakes, so always review consequential work." On the Monday before launch, OpenAI disclosed its agents had posted users' images online, affecting 53 ChatGPT users. It envisions teams of dots working together over time and tested specialist dots in procurement, invoice processing, email marketing, customer support and commercial contracting.
