EA Announces BioWare Closure, 400 Job Cuts

Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare and cutting about 400 jobs, roughly 3% of its workforce, including around 50 positions at the studio; BioWare’s Edmonton office will also close, and EA said it would help affected employees explore other roles within the company. The shutdown ends more than three decades of BioWare history and cancels its early-development Mass Effect game. The restructuring also cancels a planned Sims project and reduces the team behind Skate. The cuts follow EA’s $55 billion buyout and come amid efforts to reduce costs, while the company says it will prioritize projects including EA Sports, Apex Legends, the next Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel’s Iron Man. BioWare’s recent titles, including Anthem and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, struggled commercially, leaving the future of its best-known franchises uncertain.
