Teen Faces Second-Degree Murder Charge After Fatal Crash

An 18-year-old Traverse City man, Jackson Matthew Lakies, was charged with second-degree murder and operating while intoxicated causing death after an Oct. 3 crash in Peninsula Township killed his 17-year-old passenger, Jason Douglas Soloman. Investigators say the BMW was traveling about 129 mph five seconds before it left the road and struck a tree, with braking detected only moments before impact; prosecutors also allege Lakies was under the influence of alcohol. Lakies was arraigned and denied bond, and prosecutors cited previous police contacts and complaints about his driving in explaining the murder charge, which they said reflects the alleged severity and history of his conduct. The charges carry penalties of up to life in prison for second-degree murder and up to 15 years for operating while intoxicated causing death.
