Ten Red Wolves Move Between States for Conservation
Ten critically endangered red wolves were exchanged between the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, North Carolina, and the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York, as part of a coordinated recovery and breeding effort. Three wolves moved from New York to North Carolina, while a breeding pair and their five pups traveled from Durham to New York, where the family will have more space and opportunities to develop skills that could support future release into the wild. The transfers help manage breeding and genetic diversity among wolves in human care; eastern North Carolina remains the species’ only wild population, with fewer than 30 wolves reported in the wild.
