Players End Public Campaign, Form New Grand Slam Advisory Council
Top tennis players are ending their public campaign for greater influence, player-welfare funding and a larger share of Grand Slam revenues, shifting their efforts to a new Player Advisory Council. The council will allow players to negotiate directly and on an ongoing basis with the four major tournaments. Although the players’ goal of receiving 22% of tournament revenues by 2030 remains unmet, prize funds have increased substantially, reaching a combined record level across the majors, and players estimate that more than $30 million in recent increases exceeded historical growth. The group also welcomed a French Open proposal to tie payouts to tournament profits and the U.S. Open’s commitment to player welfare, while urging the other Grand Slams to adopt similar measures.
