Tesla Driver-Assist Engaged Before Fatal New Jersey Crash
Tesla told federal regulators that its driver-assistance system was “Verified Engaged” before a fatal August 22, 2026, crash on Route 55 in Vineland, New Jersey. The Tesla Model Y crossed the highway median and struck a Chevrolet SUV, killing 68-year-old driver Phillip Eastman; the Tesla driver and an SUV passenger were injured. The filing does not show whether the system caused the crash or was controlling the vehicle, and Tesla withheld the crash narrative, software version and information about whether the road was within the system’s approved operating conditions. The disclosure has renewed questions about the public’s access to crash-report details, following a court ruling that challenged the justification for keeping some operating-domain information confidential while allowing other technical details to remain protected.
