Texas Plans Sixth Execution, Second in Week

Texas is scheduled to execute Ker’Sean Olajuwa Ramey on Wednesday for the 2005 killings of Celso Lopez, Tiffani Peacock and Samuel Roberts during a failed robbery in Edna. Prosecutors said Ramey and codefendant LeJames Norman entered the home seeking cocaine and shot the three victims; Norman was executed Sept. 16 after testifying against Ramey. Ramey’s attorneys have challenged the conviction and death sentence, citing racial bias in jury selection, ineffective counsel, mitigating evidence of childhood abuse and poverty, and the lack of physical evidence linking him to the crime. Witness testimony, including from Ramey’s former girlfriend, and the recovery of two guns were central to the prosecution’s case. If carried out, Ramey’s execution would be Texas’ sixth this year, with three more scheduled and potentially making 2026 the state’s busiest execution year of the decade.
