Thailand Welcomes US-Myanmar Talks, Expects ASEAN Discussion
Thailand welcomes renewed U.S. talks with Myanmar’s military-backed government, saying engagement could help prevent Myanmar’s isolation and encourage peaceful conflict resolution without legitimizing the regime. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expects ASEAN leaders to discuss Myanmar’s future at their November summit in Manila, though it remains unclear whether the country could regain full representation after being barred following the 2021 coup. Sihasak also said Thailand and Cambodia could resolve their longstanding land and maritime boundary disputes within 12 to 18 months, while acknowledging little progress so far and stressing that confidence-building and border security must come first.
