Three Florida Metros See Property Taxes Outpace Home Values
A ConsumerAffairs analysis of Census data found property taxes rose faster than home values in 46 of the 100 largest U.S. metro areas from 2022 to 2024, with Florida metros prominent among the biggest gaps. Lakeland-Winter Haven ranked first nationally: property taxes climbed about 28% while home values rose 14.2%. Jacksonville ranked second, as property taxes increased 21.7% against an 8.1% rise in home values; Cape Coral-Fort Myers ranked 11th, with a 9-percentage-point gap. The report’s longer-term comparison showed a narrower divergence in Lakeland and Jacksonville from 2019 to 2024, and Florida voters are scheduled to consider a homestead-exemption amendment in November 2026.
