Three Child Flu Deaths Reported in Southern California Amid Rise
San Diego County has reported two child deaths from influenza this month: an 11-year-old who was otherwise healthy and a 6-month-old with complex medical conditions. The deaths are among 11 flu-related deaths and 516 hospitalizations reported in the county this season, compared with two deaths and 86 hospitalizations at the same point last year; positive tests are rising sharply, particularly among children ages 5 to 17. San Bernardino County also reported its first pediatric flu-related death of the season, involving a child with underlying conditions who was too young to be vaccinated, as flu activity there began earlier than usual. Health officials urge everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated promptly, noting that it takes about two weeks for protection to develop, and recommend measures such as handwashing and avoiding close contact with sick people.
