Ticket Resellers Sue to Block DC Resale Limits
A coalition of ticket-resale companies, including SeatGeek, Vivid Seats, GameTime and TickPick, has sued in federal court to block Washington, D.C.’s RESALE Act before it takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. The law, approved by the D.C. Council to curb scalping and protect consumers, generally caps resale prices for covered event tickets at 10% above face value, requires disclosure of fees and bars listings for tickets sellers do not yet possess. The companies argue the restrictions violate the Constitution and exceed the District’s authority, including by regulating transactions across state lines and requiring disclosure of original prices that resellers may not know; they also say the limits could make resale operations unworkable. Supporters say the law is intended to rein in price gouging and make ticket sales more transparent, while the resellers contend it could push sales into less safe channels or lead platforms to stop listing tickets for D.C. events.
