Toledo chemical tank explosion prompts evacuations amid blast risk
A chemical tank containing glycidyl methacrylate exploded at an industrial facility in Toledo, Ohio, prompting about 983 people within a one-mile radius to evacuate and residents in a wider area to shelter in place. Officials warned the tank could still be releasing the hazardous chemical, which can cause irritation or burning of the eyes, nose, mouth and skin, as well as symptoms including headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Because the chemical may remain volatile and pose a risk of another explosion, emergency crews held back and planned to reassess conditions before approaching the tank. One responding sheriff’s deputy was injured and went to the hospital; officials had not determined what caused the explosion.
