Toyota estimates $6.4B yearly automation spend for 400,000 robots

Toyota estimates it may spend about 1 trillion yen ($6.4 billion, or 5.5 billion euros) a year starting in 2028 to modernize automation across its factories, group companies and major suppliers. Roughly 400,000 robots, including humanoid and traditional industrial systems, could eventually be deployed. The plan includes automated transport and logistics, industrial robotics, and human-robot collaboration systems. Toyota discussed the potential investment with investors earlier this month but has not committed to a firm annual budget or a specific timeline or total program cost. Bernstein analysts said in a Friday note that the robotics focus could raise investor recognition of growth opportunities beyond automobiles. "We expect robotics-related announcements to become more frequent going forward as Toyota accelerates its robotics efforts," they wrote.
