Trees feature across forests, festivals, historic sites
A century-old secondary forest in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, has been added to the Old Growth Forest Network after researchers confirmed it has been protected for at least 130 years, with some trees estimated to be about 190 years old. The forest’s layered canopy, naturally decomposing logs and cycles of regrowth support varied wildlife and plants. Several communities are also making trees the focus of seasonal displays: Morven Museum in Princeton plans its annual Festival of Trees with decorations created by 17 local partners, while Illinois’ Old Courthouse Museum is inviting groups and residents to decorate trees for its 58th Christmas Tree Lane. In Bend, Oregon, two ponderosa pines estimated to be 250 years old remain growing through the floor of the historic Pine Tavern restaurant.
