Education Department marks transgender student data as suppressed under Trump order

The Education Department’s 2023–24 Civil Rights Data Collection was released with all figures concerning nonbinary students and gender-identity-related bullying replaced by a code stating they were “Suppressed in Compliance with Executive Order.” The suppressed information includes allegations of harassment, school policies prohibiting such conduct, and data intended to document transgender and nonbinary students’ experiences with discipline and sports participation. The move follows President Donald Trump’s executive order defining sex as only male or female, and the administration has indicated that additional data will be released while removing gender-identity questions from future collections. Civil rights advocates and former Education Department officials said the change will make it harder to understand and address conditions facing transgender and nonbinary students; about 1,800 of more than 13,000 districts reported such data in the previous collection.
