Trump Nominates Serrano for Western Washington U.S. Attorney

President Donald Trump has nominated Pete Serrano, a former Pasco mayor and unsuccessful 2024 Republican candidate for Washington attorney general, to lead the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington. Serrano currently serves as the Eastern District’s first assistant U.S. attorney and as a special attorney to the attorney general after his interim appointment there expired without Senate confirmation. His earlier nomination stalled amid opposition from Washington’s Democratic senators, and Sen. Patty Murray again vowed to use every available tool to block him, calling him unqualified and accusing the administration of creating a workaround to install him. The nomination follows Trump’s firing of Roger Rogoff, whom Western District judges unanimously appointed after an interim appointment expired; Rogoff has sued, arguing the dismissal violated federal law. Serrano said he had not spoken with Trump about the nomination and expects the senators’ opposition to continue.
