Trump, Rubio weigh firing Guilfoyle as Greece envoy
President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are weighing whether to fire Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece. A senior U.S. official told AP they are "extremely pissed off" by reports of improper and possibly illegal conduct, with a decision expected this week after Monday's Columbus Day holiday. The Wall Street Journal has reported allegations including a threat to a Greek official, improper gifts and services, and that Guilfoyle asked Eric Deters to pay a $100,000 American Express bill before her July 2025 confirmation hearing while offering access to officials; Deters declined. The Daily Mail reported she alienated embassy staff. An official said the State Department inspector general is looking into the matter; formal probe status is unconfirmed. Guilfoyle's lawyer denies wrongdoing and has challenged the authenticity of some reported messages. During Rubio's Athens visit, Guilfoyle greeted him with a bear hug and attended most of his events. Rubio said "Our ambassador has been a strong ambassador here," then at his plane, with Guilfoyle present, told reporters source claims are "not the gospel for me." Rep. Robert Garcia's October 8 letter sought records by October 22. Gregory Meeks and Jeanne Shaheen have called for an investigation. No dismissal has been announced.
