Trump Seeks Death Penalty for Firefighter Killers
On Oct. 15, 2026, at a White House Rose Garden lunch for firefighter organizations and first responders, President Donald Trump directed Attorney General Todd Blanche to pursue the death penalty for people who kill firefighters. He said they are "shot at going up ladders" in some neighborhoods and "You ought to blow up the damn place." Trump declared, "We're bringing the death penalty back for anybody that kills a police officer, by the way, or anybody in law enforcement," and said America owes first responders a debt it can never fully repay. Steve Hirsch of the National Volunteer Fire Council presented a firefighter helmet with a blessing; Trump said it could have helped in the 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania assassination attempt. A Jan. 20, 2025 executive order seeks the death penalty for murder of a law enforcement officer and does not mention firefighters. Trump's March 4, 2025 Congress address called for mandatory death penalty for murdering a police officer. Contested is whether the Rose Garden directive expands that policy: Trump asked Blanche if the approach could extend to firefighter killings and ordered pursuit of it, while the record states the January order does not cover firefighters. No left-rated coverage is in the record; one right-rated outlet is.
