Trump Targets El-Sayed With Anti-Muslim Attacks
President Donald Trump has intensified attacks on Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, repeatedly misnaming him and branding him a jihadist, extremist and terrorist sympathizer without providing evidence. At a rally and in social media posts, Trump endorsed Republican Mike Rogers and portrayed El-Sayed as hostile to the country; Republican Sen. John Kennedy also made an unsupported comparison between El-Sayed and Osama bin Laden. El-Sayed has rejected the attacks and argued Trump is using his name and Muslim faith to distract from economic concerns, while emphasizing issues such as health care and affordability. The contest is closely watched, with recent polling described as tight and one small voter panel suggesting some Trump supporters may favor El-Sayed.
