Trump, Xi Strike Positive Tone After High-Level Washington Talks

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping struck a positive tone Friday as they wrapped up a high-profile visit in Washington, with both leaders praising the atmosphere surrounding their latest talks. According to Fox News, Trump described the visit as “very productive” while hosting Xi and Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan for tea at the White House. Trump said the two countries had made “great strides” and called the visit a positive development for both nations. Xi also offered strong praise for the reception he and Peng received. Speaking through a translator, the Chinese leader said the arrangements were carried out to the “highest order of perfection,” adding that attention had been paid to even the smallest details. The two leaders also discussed their broader approach to U.S.-China relations. Xi said he and Trump were working to guide the relationship toward what he described as “strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity. Trump said he expected additional progress in the months ahead. Xi is scheduled to have two more opportunities to meet with Trump before the end of the year, including at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in China in November and the G20 Summit in December at Trump’s Doral resort in Miami. “We will see you, and we'll be speaking a lot,” Trump told Xi. He also pointed to potential benefits for American farmers as the countries continue working through trade issues. The Washington visit followed months of negotiations over major economic and geopolitical disputes. The two governments have been discussing areas including rare-earth minerals, agricultural purchases, trade, investment and technology. The leaders' upbeat public remarks came as several major disagreements remained unresolved. Issues involving tariffs, advanced technology, artificial intelligence, intellectual property and Taiwan continue to shape the broader U.S.-China relationship. Xi's state visit, which ran from Sept. 23 to 25, marked another direct meeting between the two leaders as Washington and Beijing seek greater stability in their relationship. China had described the visit as an opportunity for expanded dialogue and cooperation while managing differences between the two governments. After Xi departed Washington, Trump said on Truth Social that the meeting had been marked by “Friendship, Strength, and Success” for both countries and said he was looking forward to seeing the Chinese leader again.
