Type 1 Risk Awareness Gaps Persist in Texas, Massachusetts
A survey commissioned by Sanofi and conducted by Beyond Type 1 found that many families with a first-degree relative with type 1 diabetes (T1D) do not know that family history raises risk: 33% of Texas respondents and 31% of Massachusetts respondents were unaware. Concern was widespread—88% of Texas respondents and 91% of Massachusetts respondents said they were worried about their own or their child’s risk—but concern did not consistently translate into action. Immediate family members of someone with T1D can be up to 15 times more likely to develop the condition, underscoring the importance of risk awareness and early planning. Separately, research coverage has highlighted potential benefits of screening children for T1D at a young age.
