U.S. Expected to Add Two Military Sites in Greenland Under New Pact

The United States, Denmark and Greenland are expected to sign a security agreement on September 22 during the U.N. General Assembly in New York that would expand the U.S. military presence on the Arctic island. The plan reportedly includes reopening the Cold War-era Bluie West One base at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and establishing a facility at Mestersvig in the east, currently used by Denmark’s Sirius dog-sled patrol, alongside the existing Pituffik Space Base. The agreement’s text has not been released, and sources say its final terms remain unsettled. U.S. officials say the pact is intended to protect Greenland and the United States, while Danish officials say it would place Arctic security under NATO’s collective oversight and respect Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenland’s right to self-determination. The arrangement follows current President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for greater U.S. control over Greenland, a position opposed by most Greenland residents.
