U.S. rental markets show uneven competition

Rental-market conditions vary widely across the country. Port St. Lucie ranks among the nation’s most competitive small rental markets, while Dayton remains tight, with about nine applicants per available apartment and units typically renting in under 40 days; competition has eased somewhat from its summer peak, but local rents are still rising. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, by contrast, apartment supply and competition for tenants are giving renters more options and concessions, while median rent fell nearly 2% year over year in September 2026. Renters’ choices and costs continue to differ across Texas cities.
