U.S. States Ranked by Auto Repair Shop Density

A comparison using Bureau of Labor Statistics data found 176,403 automotive repair and maintenance establishments nationwide in the fourth quarter of 2025, with shop density varying sharply by state. Wyoming ranked first at 494 shops and the highest per-capita rate, while South Dakota and Montana also ranked among the leaders, reflecting the car dependence of sparsely populated states. California had the most shops overall with 20,998, but ranked 24th per capita; Texas had the second-most with 14,614 but ranked 42nd by population-adjusted density. Among the states highlighted, Idaho ranked eighth per capita with 1,453 shops, Florida ranked 29th with 12,111, Connecticut ranked 31st with 1,847, Delaware ranked 39th with 510, and Hawaii ranked 48th with 612. Arizona ranked last per capita despite having 3,230 shops.
