UAE Lab Releases Six Fully Open AI Models

The UAE’s Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence has launched K2 Horizon, a family of six AI foundation models ranging from 900 million to 375 billion parameters. Unlike open-weight systems that publish only downloadable model files, K2 Horizon provides the weights, source code, training data and training methodology, enabling researchers to inspect, reproduce and adapt the models. The lineup spans devices from watches and phones to local servers and enterprise deployments, with the university promoting features including dynamic model routing and mixture-of-value architecture. The release comes amid growing debate over whether AI models should be openly accessible: supporters say full transparency advances research and competition, while critics warn that open models can be harder to monitor and safeguard.
