Uber, WeRide Secure Spain’s First Level 4 Permit
Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic has granted WeRide, Uber and AVOMO the country’s first national permit for Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles on public roads. The authorization allows an initial fleet of 20 WeRide GXR vehicles to operate in high-demand areas of Greater Madrid for mapping, route validation and operational-readiness testing, with an in-car specialist supervising each vehicle during the initial phase. The permit does not itself authorize paid passenger service; the companies are targeting commercial robotaxi operations through Uber by the end of 2026, subject to additional regulatory and operational approvals. The deployment is part of WeRide and Uber’s plan to expand autonomous ride-hailing across 15 cities by 2030, with AVOMO managing fleet operations.
