Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom Faces Succession Dispute

Uganda is facing competing succession disputes at both the traditional and national levels. In the Tooro Kingdom, the late King Oyo Nyimba’s family says his 2022 will names his young son as heir, contradicting a clan committee’s selection of a royal relative and prompting allegations that military forces placed the royal family under house arrest. Separately, debate over President Yoweri Museveni’s possible succession by his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has raised concerns that Uganda’s next president could be informally designated rather than chosen through a constitutional election. In Ethiopia, proposed constitutional changes that could merge the presidency and prime minister’s office may also centralize power, potentially strengthening Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s position.
