UK Communities Create Thousands of Remembrance Poppies
Communities across the UK have created knitted and crocheted poppy displays to mark Remembrance Day, with participation often exceeding organizers’ goals. In Durham, more than 30,000 poppies were donated—nearly twice the 16,386 sought to represent members of the Durham Light Infantry killed in the World Wars—and are displayed at several local venues. Holy Trinity Church in Malvern has made about 1,000 poppies, including white and purple flowers, while parishioners at St Mary’s in Bath have made 3,400 for a church display. Volunteers in Chawleigh also assembled and installed a poppy display on a village fence. Organizers and participants say the projects offer a way for people of different ages to contribute and remember those who died in war.
