UK High Court Upholds Ofcom Data Demands
The High Court in London rejected Meta, TikTok and X’s challenge to information notices issued by UK regulator Ofcom under the Online Safety Act. The notices require detailed data on content moderation, including removals and visibility restrictions, and users’ exposure to harmful material. The companies argued the requests were unduly burdensome and challenged Ofcom’s authority to demand the information; the court ruled the regulator could gather it to assess platforms’ compliance. The decision is an early test of the 2023 law, which aims to protect users—especially children—from harmful and illegal content and allows fines of up to 10% of a company’s global turnover for serious violations. Ofcom welcomed the ruling, while TikTok said it was considering the judgment.
