Urban Outfitters closes stores, plans 18 more in 2027
Retailers across the globe are tightening their physical footprints amid weaker consumer sentiment and volatile market conditions, with several brands closing stores even as others continue to expand in certain markets. Urban Outfitters and its brands in the US and Europe reduced their footprint, closing six company-owned locations in the latest quarter while planning further reductions alongside ongoing store openings. In the UK, TG Jones is undergoing a major restructuring that will shutter about 150 stores, with a subset of 19 locations set to close in September and extensive closing-down sales underway. In the US, Kroger is pruning underperforming outlets, including a Fred Meyer in Tacoma, as part of a broader plan to shut 60 stores across its brands by 2026, despite overall sales growth. European and UK retailers are also facing distress, with Eddie Bauer filing for Chapter 11 and Leading Labels entering administration and liquidating remaining stores, reflecting ongoing churn in the sector. Germany’s Roller is adding to the closures trend by shutting two more locations as part of a broader consolidation, leaving the chain with 107 stores, and signaling continued pressure on traditional retailers to recalibrate their networks.
