US, Canadian Cities Recognize Diwali

Norwich, Connecticut, held its first official Diwali recognition and celebration, with Mayor Swarnjit Singh leading a prayer and traditional diya lighting and reading a proclamation naming November 8, 2026, Diwali—Festival of Lights Day. The ceremony recognized the city’s Indian and South Asian communities and highlighted Diwali’s message of hope and the triumph of good over evil. Guests continued the celebration at a local Indian restaurant with tea and traditional foods. Norwich joins other Connecticut towns that have recognized the holiday; the state enacted a law recognizing Diwali in 2025.
