US Envoy Returns After Nicaragua Rejects Ambassador Nominee
The United States has recalled Chargé d'Affaires Elias Baumann to Washington for critical consultations after Nicaraguan co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo rejected U.S. ambassador-designate Natasha Franceschi. The State Department announced the step on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, saying it was taken at Secretary of State Marco Rubio's instruction. Washington has lacked a U.S. ambassador in Managua since 2023. The department said the decision "demonstrates their complete unwillingness to engage in productive diplomatic dialogue." Spokesman Tommy Pigott said Murillo and Ortega's rejection of Franceschi "demonstrates the hypocrisy of their rhetoric of mutual respect and their desire to engage in political theater at the expense of the Nicaraguan people." Ortega has accused the United States of interfering in Nicaragua's affairs via bodies such as the Central American Parliament and the OAS. In September, Rubio urged partners to "stop business as usual" with Nicaragua after its legislature voted to ban opposition parties from elections. The dispute comes amid a political crisis dating to April 2018 protests that left over 300 dead according to UN and civil society sources, a government statement that Nicaragua will no longer hold elections, and reported Nicaraguan security cooperation with Russia and China.
