US Synthetic Drug Mixes Complicate Overdose Response
A new wave of increasingly unpredictable synthetic-drug mixtures is complicating the U.S. overdose crisis, with fentanyl appearing alongside veterinary sedatives and other potent substances. Reporting from Columbus and Chicago describes communities confronting these drugs as officials warn that naloxone can reverse opioid effects but does not counteract sedatives such as xylazine or medetomidine. Although overdose deaths fell from a peak of about 110,000 in 2022 to roughly 70,000 last year, health workers and authorities caution that the decline does not mean the crisis is over. The changing street supply may also expose people to dangerous substances they did not expect to take, making overdoses harder to prevent and treat.
