Vanuatu Ferry Sinking Leaves One Dead, Dozens Missing
Live storm radar — Ambae, Vanuatu
At least one person has died and more than 30 remain missing after the inter-island ferry MV Matui sank off Vanuatu during a voyage between Ambae and Santo. Fifteen people have been accounted for alive, while search-and-rescue teams continue looking for survivors along the southeast coast and nearby waters, where currents may have carried them. Earlier reports said at least seven people had been rescued, including one survivor who reached Santo Island. Officials attributed the disaster to severe weather and are investigating whether marine warnings were ignored or the vessel was overloaded. Vanuatu authorities and rescue volunteers, including aircraft operators and nearby boat crews, have assisted the search.
